FDP plan: tax-free overtime for full-time employees?

The idea proposed by the FDP to make a limited number of overtime hours tax-free has met with criticism. Experts warn about the possible consequences of this measure, which is aimed at increasing work motivation. According to Christian Lindner, this regulation should also serve to increase overall working hours and attract foreign skilled workers. However, unions are concerned that this could lead to negative impacts, such as the displacement of full-time work.

The FDP's proposal is strongly criticized by DGB leader Yasmin Fahimi. She warns that workers' morale is being questioned and points out that a huge amount of unpaid overtime is already being worked. According to Verdi boss Frank Werneke, employers should pay fairly from the start to ensure that overtime is attractive. The idea of making overtime tax-free is met with resistance because it could further erode the state's revenue base.

Employees demand more appreciation for the extra work they do. Studies show that too much overtime can lead to health problems and stress. Despite the already high number of overtime hours, many of these hours are not paid, which indicates a lack of fairness and appreciation. Experts emphasize the importance of a good work-life balance and warn of the negative effects of too much overtime on employee satisfaction and fluctuation in the company.

A study by the German Institute for Economic Research shows that despite a falling average weekly working time, the total number of hours worked in Germany has increased since reunification. Working women in particular contributed to this increase. The researchers recommend making better use of women's labor market potential in order to counteract the shortage of skilled workers. However, measures that encourage women to work more overtime are not seen as a solution to companies' productivity problems.
