Stock market starts weaker: US GDP and company figures in focus

The Vienna stock market is expected to start trading on Thursday with a significant decline. A preliminary calculation of the domestic ATX showed a loss of 0.86 percent about half an hour before the start of trading. This negative development is in line with the somewhat more moderate losses that are also expected on the leading European stock exchanges. After an uninspiring close on the US stock exchanges on Wednesday, the European markets are lacking positive impulses.

In addition to the current reporting season, the focus of the trading day will also be on economic data from the USA. Particular attention is paid to the first estimate of US GDP growth. Experts assume that growth in the world's largest economy fell in the first quarter of the year compared to the final quarter of 2023.

At the company level, Andritz and Strabag presented current business figures. Andritz recorded a 4.2 percent decline in operating profit (EBIT) to 139.9 million euros in the first quarter of 2024, while sales fell 3.9 percent to 1.89 billion euros. In 2023, Austria's largest construction group, Strabag, achieved a significant increase in consolidated earnings by a third to 630.5 million euros and earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) by a quarter to 880.2 million euros, despite declining markets.

The day before, the Vienna ATX closed trading with slight losses, falling only slightly by 0.02 percent to 3,580.28 points. Investors' sights include AMAG with current figures and new analyst opinions on companies such as Andritz, Rosenbauer and voestalpine.

The biggest price winners on the prime market the day before included RHI Magnesita with an increase of 7.07 percent to 42.40 euros, Addiko Bank with an increase of 3.95 percent to 18.40 euros and Rosenbauer with an increase of 2.75 percent to 29.90 euros. The biggest losers were Lenzing with a decline of 3.34 percent to 30.35 euros, Frequentis with a loss of 3.33 percent to 26.10 euros and Marinomed with a loss of 2.89 percent to 18.45 euros.
