Q1 Performance: Nikkei, S&P 500, Euro Stoxx 50 and DAX in focus

The first quarter of 2024 is coming to an end in financial markets, with most markets not holding a trading session today due to the Easter weekend. This provides an opportunity to analyze stock market performance in the first three months of the year and draw possible conclusions about seasonality for the remainder of the year.

Looking at 11 select indices from the US, Europe and Asia Pacific shows that all indices performed better in the first quarter of 2024 than the 5- and 10-year averages suggested. It should be noted that these average values were heavily influenced, particularly by the “Black Swan” event of the Covid pandemic in 2020.

What is striking is the strong development of the Japanese Nikkei (JAP225), which increased by over 20% in the period from January to March 2024. The S&P 500, Euro Stoxx 50 and DAX also recorded double-digit growth rates in the first quarter of 2024. This information suggests that stock markets performed positively during this period.

Analyzing first quarter performance can provide important insights into the future direction of stock markets. However, it remains to be seen how economic and geopolitical developments will affect the stock markets over the remainder of the year. The future forecast based on the first quarter data could therefore be crucial to adjust investment strategies and take advantage of opportunities in the stock market.
