US government bonds are turning positive: Purchasing managers' index weighs on economic sentiment

US government bonds started the day weaker, but were able to turn moderately positive over the course of Tuesday. The futures contract for ten-year bonds rose by 0.19 percent to 108.06 points, which led to a corresponding decline in yields to 4.60 percent. An important impetus for this development was the purchasing managers' indices from market researcher S&P Global, which showed a surprising deterioration in corporate sentiment in April.

The purchasing managers' index for the entire economy fell by 1.2 points to 50.9 points compared to the previous month, but remained above the expansion threshold of 50 points. This data contrasts with previous assumptions of strong U.S. economic performance, which may put less pressure on the Fed to cut interest rates. In addition to the S&P figures, sales data from the real estate market also played a role. In March, the number of new homes sold rose surprisingly sharply, after a significant decline in February, which now appeared to be larger than initially estimated.
