Grants for the Medical University in Brandenburg: Agreement reached!

Brandenburg's SPD parliamentary group leader Björn Lüttmann announced today that the subsidies for the Brandenburg Medical School (MHB) in Neuruppin will be cut less than originally planned. In 2025 and 2026, the university will receive a total of 2.6 million euros more than provided for in the first draft of the double budget. For 2025, the subsidy will remain at 6.6 million euros, while for 2026 it will be reduced to 6 million euros.

The agreement on the grants was qualified as an appreciation for the MHB. The original plan was to cut funding by 1.6 million euros per year to five million euros. In this context, the SPD and coalition partner BSW have introduced more than 40 amendments to the double budget. Further changes, including cuts to family benefits, are planned for a future meeting.

Changes in the education sector

The coalition is also planning cuts in education funding that could lead to a reduction in teaching positions. The number of weekly hours for full-time teachers will be increased, but without an increase in working hours. In order to cover the loss of lessons, the budget for substitute hours will be increased by 1.5 million euros this year and by 3.6 million euros next year. In addition, 700 teacher training students will work as assistants in schools in order to gain practical professional experience.

In addition, the health care pact in the Ministry of Health will be increased from 9 to 11 million euros. Despite these increases, cuts have to be made elsewhere, which, among other things, results in a reduction of funds for the state's teacher recruitment campaign by 1.5 million euros. CDU parliamentary group leader Jan Redmann has announced amendments worth around 50 million euros, including proposals for structural changes in the workforce and civil servants as well as further investments in infrastructure.
