BDI calls for more armaments: red alert for Germany!

On January 12, 2025, the BDI (Federation of German Industries) reported on the requirements for Germany to take on more responsibility with regard to security and defense. In a clear message, the BDI declared that “the time of the peace dividend is over”. This statement is interpreted as a call for increased armament, arms exports and military operations.

The BDI is a partner of the Munich Security Conference, which will take place from February 14th to 16th, 2025. A central counter-demonstration is planned for February 15, 2025 in Munich, which will deal with the global power struggle and its effects on workers. The high spending on armaments projects is criticized, while cuts are being made in the education, health and social sectors. This leads to a growing gap between the richest and poorest social classes. The counter-demonstration calls for an overcoming of the capitalist system and a fight for a socialist perspective, with the slogan: "Fight capital until peace wins! For peace and socialism!"

Security conference and international tensions

The 55th Munich Security Conference (MSC) will address current international tensions and the preservation of the liberal world order. The title of the current Munich security report is “The Great Puzzle: Who wants to pick up the pieces”. A key aspect is competition between the USA, Russia and China, with BDI President Dieter Kempf warning that “waiting is the biggest risk”. As Europe's largest economy, Germany cannot afford to remain passive.

A survey by the Pew Research Center shows that the German population considers Germany's involvement in international politics to be important. In addition, a common foreign and security policy in Europe is considered necessary in order to be able to meet future global challenges. The BDI is actively involved in discussions to promote dialogue on security issues during the MSC. The BDI also makes recommendations on regulation and ethical issues in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) in security and defense.

In addition, the BDI calls for a ban on autonomous weapon systems (LAWS) and emphasizes that decisions about life and death should always rest with people. The need for closer cooperation in the development and procurement of weapon systems is highlighted. Projects such as FCAS and MGCS between Germany and France show potential for bilateral arms cooperation. The background to these efforts is also the growing security policy importance of space, whose market is expected to grow to over 2,700 billion dollars by 2040.
