Citizens' Council on the new pension system for Bremen MPs

The Bremen parliamentarians are striving for higher retirement benefits and are therefore planning a new regulation of the pension system. In order to ensure transparency and participation, a citizens' assembly will be set up to develop proposals for the new system. This is intended to ensure that MPs do not make their own decisions about their salaries.

Between 50 and 80 Bremen citizens are planned to develop the new pension system, who will develop a model together with pension experts, the taxpayers' association and the Court of Auditors. By the end of the year, a concrete proposal should be available as to how the retirement benefits of Bremen MPs could be structured in the future.

The current pension system for MPs was converted from a state-funded system to a funded system in 2011. In addition to compensation, MPs currently receive over 900 euros per month for retirement provision. You have to pay this money into insurance.

The returns from the existing system were found to be lower than expected, creating a desire for change. Due to legal restrictions, MPs are not able to simply pay into pension insurance like other citizens. This was the result of a report commissioned by the parliamentary administration.
