Chaos in Berlin: Delay in the Brenner north inflow causes confusion!
The plans for the German access route to the Brenner Base Tunnel are facing another delaying hurdle. It currently appears that the Bundestag will not decide on Deutsche Bahn's controversial route proposal next spring as planned. The reason for this is the upcoming federal election, which will probably delay a decision until the next legislative period. This was reported by SPD member of the Bundestag Christian Schreider, who is responsible for the transport issue, while the Bavarian Ministry of Transport was also unable to give a positive forecast. The completion of the Brenner Base Tunnel, one of the central traffic arteries in Europe, is planned for 2032, but there is a lack of binding plans on the German side for the approximately 50-kilometer-long feeder route that will run through the Bavarian Inn Valley, as in the article by T Online is highlighted.
Political blockade and uncertainty
The uncertainty surrounding the future of the project is heightened by the political turmoil in Berlin. Daniela Ludwig, CSU member of the Bundestag from Rosenheim, said that no clear decisions can currently be made. The mood in the capital is tense and all applications and decisions appear to be on hold, including proposals to relocate connection points. On the other hand, Karl Bär from the Greens shows understanding for the citizens' concerns and suggests that a quick decision be made before the new elections. A so-called motion for a resolution could be used to build up political pressure to bring about clarification before waiting for a new government, but this is not legally binding BR executed.
Citizens' initiatives in the region are also under pressure in view of these developments. Lothar Thaler from the “Brenner Dialog” alliance warned against making important decisions hastily, as the coming political changes may have an impact on the long-term planning of the Brenner north inlet. The authorities are currently examining the core demands of the initiatives relating to alternative routes and tunneling under the Inn, while the Bundestag must ultimately decide on the implementation of the previous plans.
