David Wertli: SHV's new financial manager with a passion for handball

David Wertli is the new head of finance and controlling at the Swiss Handball Association (SHV). The 39-year-old succeeds Maik Born, who is leaving the association at his own request at the end of May. Wertli brings with him a well-founded background in finance and controlling, which is shaped by his previous positions, including in the management of controlling and finance at Zurich and Generali Versicherung as well as at the Canton of Aargau and the University of Education. In these functions he was responsible for financial management and strategic development.

With his analytical mindset and a clear focus on measurable data, Wertli will become part of the SHV leadership team, which emphasizes data-driven association leadership for planning and development in Swiss handball. The association is optimistic that Wertli's structured way of working will further improve the SHV's financial conditions. Wertli is also a committed handball player who was not only active as a player, but also as a coach and official at HSC Suhr-Aarau. His passion for the sport and his in-depth understanding of handball clubs will support him in his new role.

Welcome to SHV

The Swiss Handball Association warmly welcomes David Wertli and at the same time thanks Maik Born for his commitment during his time in the association. The signing of Wertli appears to be a strategic decision to set the course for a successful future in Swiss handball.

In a different context, the German easyCredit BBL has announced a new attendance record, indicating the growing interest in sporting events. In the first half of the 2024-25 season, a total of 638,737 fans attended the first 136 games, an average of 4,697 spectators per game - a clear increase compared to the previous record of 4,494 spectators per game in the 2013-14 season. This illustrates a positive trend for the sports that are supported as part of association work and a growing fan base in Germany.

ALBA Berlin leads the attendance statistics with an average of 8,682 fans per game, while EWE Baskets Oldenburg has achieved the highest occupancy of 100% with 37 consecutive sold-out games. The average capacity utilization of all BBL games to date is 91%, which underlines the successful course of the season. For the Swiss Handball Association, this positive trend in the BBL could serve as an inspiring example, which also offers incentives for the local handball sport to increase the number of spectators.

With David Wertli at the helm of finance, the SHV will hopefully be able to not only strengthen its internal structures, but also further advance the sport of handball in Switzerland as a whole.
