Financial crisis in Burgenland: communities in distress and resignations!
The financial situation of the communities in Burgenland is described as an “oppressive situation”. This corresponds to a trend that can also be observed in Germany, where the municipal financing deficit rose to 24.8 billion euros in 2024, which is the highest level since reunification. How ZDF reported, the deficit in 2023 was still 6.6 billion euros and has therefore worsened dramatically.
In Germany, municipal budget spending rose by 12.6% compared to the previous year, while income only increased by 7.6%. As a result, 6.2% of expenditure was not covered by regular revenue, which led to financing through reserves or loans. The situation is described as “catastrophic” and reforms to the financial system are called for in order to give the municipalities a stable financial basis.
Current developments in Burgenland
While the communities in Burgenland are struggling with financial challenges, there was also positive news. Today 22 new lieutenants and sergeants were appointed to the armed forces. In addition, the state manager Jasmin Puchwein resigned from her post, which caused a stir in the political landscape of Burgenland.
Another highlight is the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Heiligenkreuz elementary school, which has brought several generations together. In the political scene, Andreas Wirth was re-elected as president. Nevertheless, the ÖVP caused controversy when it left a meeting after the presentation of the cultural center.
Honors and awards
As part of the awards, the BECOM Innovation Award 2025 was presented to HTL Pinkafeld. This is evidence of the innovative strength and commitment of the educational institutions in Burgenland. Helmut Sillner was awarded a prize of 3,000 euros, which is also seen as a sign of outstanding achievements in the region.
An additional cultural offering is complemented by the tour of the spa museum, which underlines the diverse leisure activities in the region.
Overall, it is clear that the financial situation of the municipalities in both Burgenland and Germany is tense, while local achievements and celebrations strengthen the sense of community.
