Zurich Airport expects record number of passengers – travel to the USA is booming!

Zurich Airport is recording a sharp increase in passenger numbers and has high expectations for the current year. Company boss Lukas Brosi expressed optimism about the development of demand, especially with regard to travel to the USA. Despite tariff threats from the US government, Brosi believes that travelers will go on their planned trips to the USA. However, travelers who forego a trip to the United States tend to choose alternative destinations. This dynamic leads the airport operator to believe that demand for services in Zurich will remain high.

In advance, Brosi predicts a record of 32 million passengers for 2025, which would be above the previous record of 31.5 million from 2019. The upcoming summer business is highlighted as crucial for passenger numbers. Operations during the Easter holidays have already gone smoothly, showing that the airport is well prepared for the challenges ahead.

Passenger numbers almost reach pre-Corona levels

Seat occupancy increased by 2.5 percentage points to 80.6 percent in 2024, which can be attributed to larger aircraft and improved utilization. The airport was directly connected to 198 cities in 74 countries by 68 airlines in 2024. The most visited destinations included European metropolises such as London, Berlin and Amsterdam, as well as intercontinental destinations such as New York, Dubai and Bangkok.

Long-term projects and challenges

In addition, Brosi emphasizes the ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the completion of the infrastructure in Noida near Delhi, where the first cargo and passenger flights are expected in 2025. He points out that this project is designed to last 40 years and is therefore long-term in nature. Brosi also expresses optimism about the upcoming fee discussions in the fall, as fees at Zurich Airport have not been adjusted since 2016. He sees a need for action given the increased number of passengers and increased costs.

One of the biggest challenges remains ensuring a sufficient workforce in the aviation sector. Political and regulatory restrictions are also considered problematic. With regard to the prestigious “The Circle” project at the airport, Brosi expresses satisfaction, even if demand in the retail sector is lower than expected. Nevertheless, the catering industry is proving to be a stable factor, and despite a vacancy rate of 10 percent, he continues to believe in the long-term prospects of the project.

The Zurich Airport share was temporarily 0.70 percent higher at CHF 228.80, which further underlines the positive climate around the airport. The weather situation for Zurich Airport remains promising, both in the short and long term.

Further details and a comprehensive analysis of business performance in 2024 will be presented on March 7, 2025, further fueling the excitement about future developments. While the airport is making all its preparations, those responsible and travelers alike are looking to the future with optimism.
