Retire earlier: Which age groups are allowed to retire before 67?

Pension policy in Germany is the focus of discussions and criticism, especially with regard to the traffic light coalition's pension package and the planned pension increase in summer 2024. Regardless of current events, many people are concerned with questions about pensions, including at what age they are allowed to retire.

Normally, retirement in Germany begins at the age of 67, with the possibility of discounts for those who want to retire earlier. However, not all age groups are allowed to retire without deductions before the age of 67. Only insured people born between 1958 and 1963 have this option, while for people born after 1964 the retirement age is 67, even after 35 years of contributions.

Various factors are decisive for pension entitlement in Germany, including the minimum insured period of at least five years in the pension fund. After 20 years of work, a claim to a disability pension can arise, while 35 years of work is considered to be a “long-term insured person”. The retirement age could be raised to 67 in the future, although Labor Minister Hubertus Heil rejects further increases.

The question arises as to whether it will be possible to retire earlier in the future without having to accept deductions. This is currently not the case for most vintages from 1964 onwards, except for miners who have an exception. It is advisable, especially for current pensioners, to obtain precise information about their pension entitlements and, if necessary, apply for pension points.
