Budget meeting in Saxony: Billion dollar gap and cuts threaten!

On Monday, February 10, 2025, the Saxon minority government will meet in Roßwein for a budget meeting. The meeting, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon, is the second of its kind. At the first meeting in the second half of January, the first course was set for the upcoming double budget 2025/2026. The CDU is discussing the government draft together with the SPD.

As part of this retreat, the draft should be finalized by March 24th and then handed over to the state parliament. The Free State of Saxony expects that the budget will not be approved until the summer. In the discussions it is emphasized that the financial situation is tense: the head of government, Michael Kretschmer, points to necessary cuts in all areas and describes the unfunded budget gap of around 4.3 billion euros as a challenge. The government is planning measures to close this gap, including using the budget balancing reserve, lower payments into the generation fund and saving on staff. The results of the exam will be presented on Tuesday in Roßwein MZ.de reported.

Preliminary budget and economic management

For further information about the financial framework for 2025, the Saxon State Ministry of Finance published an administrative regulation on provisional budget and economic management on December 12, 2024. This regulation comes into force on January 1, 2025 and remains valid until the adoption of the Budget Law 2025/2026.

The regulation stipulates that expenditure may only be made for legally existing institutions and for measures that have already been decided. Expenditure on new facilities is only permitted if there is a legal obligation. All expenses must be necessary, objective and cannot be postponed. The amount of expenditure is also precisely defined: For example, up to 50% of the funds may be used for expenses linked to the staff plan, such as RevoSax.de explained. These requirements are part of the effort to respect financial limits and ensure responsible financial management.
