Inflation compensation for pensioners: unions and associations are demanding 3,000 euros

An alliance of unions and associations from Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg has called for inflation compensation for pensioners totaling 3,000 euros. Signatures are being collected to reinforce the demands. IG Metall, the regional associations of Workers' Welfare (AWO) and the German Social Association, the VdK Social Association and senior citizens' advisory councils are part of this alliance and are calling on supporters nationwide to get involved. Over 15,000 signatures have already been collected and will be handed over to politicians in Kiel and Hamburg on June 15th.

According to the alliance, pension adjustments have remained below inflation rates since 2021 and do not sufficiently cover the rising costs for heating, energy, rent, food and medication. For many pensioners, the money barely lasts until the end of the month. In contrast, public sector pensioners have already received inflation compensation.

In Schleswig-Holstein, for example, pensioners were given a tax- and duty-free special payment, the amount of which depended on the pension earned. Wolfgang Baasch, chairman of the AWO in Schleswig-Holstein, confirms that the current pension system is perceived as unfair. Many pensioners do not see their decades of work as being adequately compensated. The required inflation compensation should not only relieve the burden on the wallet, but also convey a feeling of personal justice.
