Young financial experts: Caritas teaches money knowledge in schools!

On July 16, 2025, the “Money-Check” financial project of the Caritas Association Geldern-Kevelaer will be carried out again at schools in the Kleve district. The aim of the project is to teach young people how to deal with finances consciously and responsibly. The Caritas Association has been offering this successful program for several years, which most recently attracted the ninth graders of the Liebfrauen-Realschule in Geldern as participants.

The workshops focus on topics such as budget planning, budget control, contractual traps and everyday financial life. Andrea Leenen-Dicks, debt counselor and project manager, emphasizes the importance of financial decisions. The workshops use active methods such as group work, lectures, discussion groups and surveys. The focus is on real life situations, such as earning your own money for the first time or taking out subscriptions.

Support for young people

After the workshops, Caritas debt counseling is available to young people to receive support with financial questions. Interested schools can contact Andrea Leenen-Dicks directly to integrate the project into their curricula.

The Money Check project is part of the broader FINANCIAL CAMPAIGN approach, which aims to promote financial independence for young people. A related project, “Young Finance,” was launched in 2023 and addresses similar objectives. According to ING, the aim of Young Finance is to promote money management, debt avoidance and strategies for when money becomes tight.

“Young Finance” also promotes exchanges about financial matters and personal experiences. Since the start of the project, over 17,000 young people have been reached in prevention units. The initiative was recently presented at the “Festival of Financial Education” of the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education in order to attract further stakeholders and players to the project. These programs are important steps in giving young people the necessary financial skills and preparing them for a self-determined life.

For further information, interested schools or young people can contact the Caritas Association Geldern-Kevelaer or find out more about the “Young Finance” project on the ING website.
