Health insurance companies and weight loss injections: dispute over reimbursement of costs
The discussion about the reimbursement of weight-loss injections by statutory health insurance companies for very overweight patients divides opinion. While the Union parliamentary group's health policy spokesman, Tino Sorge, advocates reimbursement for extreme cases, statutory health insurance companies such as AOK argue against this measure. According to AOK projections, drug spending could increase dramatically, which would lead to higher health insurance contributions for all insured people.
The SPD calls for a critical review of reimbursement to ensure that the services are medically necessary and actually contribute to the treatment of diseases. Weight loss injections are currently not permitted as a health insurance benefit because the Social Security Code explicitly excludes their use for weight loss. A change in the law would be required to allow reimbursement.
The FDP, on the other hand, advocates a differentiated approach in order to separate serious illnesses from purely aesthetic needs. However, the Greens warn about possible side effects and emphasize that general funding for the injection for overweight people is unrealistic. In other European countries such as Switzerland, Great Britain and France, weight loss injections are already covered by health insurance companies if there is severe obesity.
