Lavazza wants to take over Dallmayr: A coffee giant is planning expansion!

The Italian coffee group Lavazza is showing ambitions to expand its business by taking over the traditional German company Dallmayr. This speculation is current as negotiations led by investment bank Goldman Sachs are in their early stages. Lavazza plans to take over the majority of Dallmayr through a share swap, which would represent a significant step in the corporate history of both companies. Dallmayr, with sales of around 1.2 billion euros, produces 75,000 tons of roasted coffee annually at five locations in Germany.

Lavazza itself achieved sales of 3.35 billion euros and a profit of 82 million euros in 2024. Despite the speculation, the company has not yet officially responded to the takeover rumors. It's also worth noting that Lavazza has been family-owned since 1895 and currently employs around 4,000 people. The company's coffee production exceeds 200,000 tons annually in over 100 different qualities.

Expansion plans and market strategies

The takeover of Dallmayr would be Lavazza's second acquisition within a few years. The company had already made a takeover offer to IVS, the Italian market leader in the automatic distribution of coffee and beverages, in 2024. After accepting the offer, Lavazza now holds 49 percent of IVS capital and has the option to take control of IVS between 2027 and 2034. This illustrates Lavazza's strategy to expand and overcome challenges in the coffee industry, particularly in the German market.

Dallmayr's company history begins in Munich in 1700, and the parent company, Alois Dallmayr KG, employs around 4,800 people worldwide, around half of whom work in Germany. This long-standing tradition and market anchoring make Dallmayr an attractive takeover target for Lavazza, which wants to position itself strategically in a changing market.

Overall, Lavazza's ambitions and active negotiations show that the company is ready to explore new avenues to consolidate its market position and respond to changes in the coffee industry.
