Mini job pension insurance: Is it worth paying in?

Millions of people work as mini-jobbers, from students to senior citizens. A year in a mini-job can have an impact on your later pension. If you earn 538 euros a month, your pension will increase by around five euros. Anyone who is exempt from compulsory pension insurance only has their earnings taken into account proportionately.

According to the mini-job headquarters, the monthly pension increases by around 4.32 euros for a year of mini-job if the employer pays the flat-rate contribution. The earnings limit for mini-jobs has been 538 euros per month since 2024 and will be increased to 556 euros from 2025. If hourly wages are higher than the minimum wage, the permitted working hours in a mini-job relationship are reduced.

It is particularly worthwhile for parents to pay into pension insurance, as contributions are increased by up to 50 percent between the child's third and tenth birthday. Mini-jobbers collect waiting times for a pension entitlement and are entitled to disability pensions, state funding and rehabilitation measures. Ultimately, the decision as to whether mini-jobbers want to be exempt from the pension insurance requirement must be made individually. The mini-job center is available if you have any questions.
