New Touch Card: This is how Mastercard makes everyday life easier for visually impaired people!
With the introduction of the Touch Card, Mastercard has presented an innovative solution for people with visual impairments. These cards have special notches that allow users to distinguish between different types of cards using buttons. Around 2.2 billion people worldwide have visual impairments, which is why the Touch Card is a significant step towards inclusivity.
The Touch Card is equipped with different notches: a round notch indicates debit cards, a square notch represents credit cards, while prepaid cards are identified by a triangular notch. These adaptations were developed and approved in collaboration with the UK's Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and US non-profit organization Visions VCB to maximize usability.
Functionality and design
The notch is always located on the right side of the card, making it easier for users to feel and orientate correctly. With other providers, the indentations can have different meanings, such as Visa, which uses a round indentation for credit cards. Therefore, it is recommended that users inform themselves in advance about the specific features of their cards.
In a further step, Mastercard has also introduced a melody at points of sale that signals to visually impaired people that their transaction was successful. These measures underscore Mastercard's commitment to the participation of people with visual impairments in financial services and creating an accessible environment. The development of the Touch Card also emphasized collaboration with IDEMIA, a provider of augmented identity solutions.
The launch of the Touch Card follows other Mastercard initiatives that also include support for transgender and non-binary communities through the True Name™ program. These ongoing developments demonstrate the company's commitment to providing an inclusive financial service.
