On May 23, 2025, the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the new building of the State Office of Finance took place in Weiden. This event attracted numerous high-profile guests, including Rainer Lindner from HL Immobilien, Mayor Jens Meyer, Klaus Herzog, the President of the State Office of Finance, and the Member of the State Parliament Dr. Stephan Oetzinger and Finance Minister Albert Füracker. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, which were characterized by drizzle, the guests were in great spirits and beamed.

Construction of the new state office began in April 2020 when the former Bürgerbräu site was acquired. Leveling machines and excavators are currently in use and the first parts of the building have already been erected. According to the schedule, the first officials are expected to move in in November 2023, while completion is targeted for All Saints Day 2026. The demolished factory apartments leave behind piles of rubble on site, which, however, make room for the new project.

Changes in the region

Finance Minister Füracker praised the remarkable change in Northern Upper Palatinate, which has developed from a “poorhouse” into an up-and-coming region. A total of 300 highly qualified jobs are to be created in the new state office by 2030, which is of great importance for the economic development of the area. Plans include, among other things, a department for Bavarian financial IT, a non-public parking garage with 260 parking spaces and a modern local heating center.

In addition, further construction projects are planned in the immediate vicinity of the state office. These include a seven-story residential high-rise and a four-story retirement home. Head of the building department Alkmar Zenger emphasized the great importance of attractive greenery and the creation of footpaths and cycle paths in order to improve the quality of life and infrastructure in the region.

The laying of the foundation stone event took place in a tent where, despite the drizzle, the positive atmosphere among the guests was noticeable. The cooperation between regional companies and the city planning office was also highlighted.
