Pension guide: Additional earnings limits and mini-jobs 2024
There are important changes in 2024 that retirees need to pay attention to. Many retirees choose to continue working even after retirement. The reasons for this are varied – from financial challenges to the need for employment. According to reports from the German Press Agency, in 2023 around 1.67 million people between the ages of 63 and 67 were subject to social security contributions and were marginally employed in Germany.
Pensioners who already receive old-age pensions have had the freedom to earn unlimited amounts since 2024, regardless of the standard retirement age. Both mini-jobs and other jobs are possible without pension payments being reduced. Previously, this was only possible for pensioners who had already reached the standard retirement age.
For pensioners with disability pensions, the additional earnings limits have been raised from January 1, 2024. In the case of full-time disability, pensioners can earn up to 18,558.75 euros per year without this being taken into account. For part-time disability, the limit is 37,117.50 euros. There are individual additional income limits depending on the type of pension, so it is advisable to seek advice from the German pension insurance before taking up a mini-job.
Another change affects mini-jobs, as the earnings limit has risen to 538 euros per month since the beginning of 2024. This increase results from the higher minimum wage of 12.41 euros per hour. Pensioners can work several mini-jobs at the same time as long as the monthly earnings limit of 538 euros is not exceeded. If income exceeds this limit, all jobs are subject to insurance and are no longer considered mini-jobs.
