Pension adjustment 2024: forecast for 2025 difficult
In July 2024, the pension in Germany will be increased by a whopping 4.57 percent, which is a positive development for pensioners. This adjustment is due to the good development of wages and salaries. This increase means that the statutory pension will be strengthened as an important pillar of old-age security. However, it is difficult to make an accurate forecast for pension adjustments in 2025.
The pension adjustment takes place in accordance with the pension adjustment formula, which is based on the development of gross wages in Germany. This formula basically says that rising wages lead to rising pensions. Despite this basic rule, there are still many other factors to consider, which is why an exact forecast for the coming years is challenging. The federal government publishes an annual pension insurance report on the development of statutory pension insurance until 2027.
It is noted that the pension adjustment in 2025 could be lower if, for example, the growth of relevant gross wages weakens. Statutory pension cuts are also excluded for the period after 2025 by the pension guarantee. A drop in the pension level below 48 percent is also legally prohibited by 2025.
Uncertainty regarding pension adjustments in the coming years remains as reliable forecasts are difficult. Nevertheless, there are legal security measures that protect pensioners from severe cuts. Pension developments in Germany therefore remain a topic of great importance for the future of old age security.
