Retirement age in Germany: When can I retire?

When employees in Germany are allowed to retire depends largely on the year of birth. While some people can retire earlier, others have to wait until their 67th birthday. This represents a crucial question for many: When is individual retirement possible?

In principle, certain criteria must be met in order to be entitled to a pension in Germany. Employees must have paid contributions to the pension fund for at least five years. The disability pension due to illness or accidents requires 20 years of contributions. In addition, 35 years of contributions are a prerequisite for various old-age pensions. However, it is possible to shorten these waiting times through certain measures.

The retirement age in Germany is largely determined by the year of birth. The retirement age is expected to gradually rise to 67 by 2031. People born between 1958 and 1963 can retire before their 67th birthday without any reductions. On the other hand, the retirement age for everyone born after 1964 is 67, even after 35 years of contributions.

For employees born after 1964, early retirement before the age of 67 is only possible with discounts. An exception are miners who work underground. This professional group is entitled to a pension without deductions from the age of 60. Interested persons can obtain further information on pension calculation if necessary.
