Pension reform debate: FDP calls for retirement to end at 63

If you feel ready for retirement, that is not yet a criterion for starting your retirement. Rather, it depends on the insurance period and the individual retirement age. The FDP's recently presented twelve-point plan has sparked discussions. The party reaffirms some of its classic positions - and in the social sector, among other things, called for an end to the so-called pension at 63, which was sharply criticized, especially by the SPD. A draft of the paper became known at the weekend and caused anger in the SPD.

The “old-age pension for those who have been insured for a particularly long time” is often still called the “pension at 63”. But at the age of 63, you can retire without any deductions - this was only possible for pensioners who were born before 1953 and had 45 years of insurance with the German pension insurance. However, this no longer applies to all younger generations who now want to retire. Even with 45 years of insurance, they must have reached the respective age limit in order to be able to retire without deductions. The retirement age is gradually increasing. “For those born in 1964 and all those born later, the pension without deductions will only be available at the age of 65 at the earliest,” the German pension insurance company announced.

However, with discounts, it is still possible to retire at the age of 63 - namely if you have at least 35 years of insurance. For all of these, there is the “old-age pension for long-term insured people”. However, retirees who do this have to “live with the corresponding losses”, as the German Press Agency further described at the time: 0.3 percent deduction from the pension achieved up to that point for each month of early retirement - up to a maximum of 14.4 percent. And: “This deduction remains permanent, even after you reach the regular retirement age,” says the DRV. The German pension insurance pension start calculator helps you find out when you can retire with or without deductions.
