Some pensioners in Germany actually receive more than 3,000 euros per month. To understand how this is possible, it is necessary to take a closer look at the pension system and the calculation of pension payments. The amount of the pension is determined, on the one hand, by the years in which contributions were paid into the pension insurance and, on the other hand, by the previous earnings. This means that high earners who started their careers early and had no interruptions receive the highest pension. However, there are other factors that influence the amount of the pension, such as the average income in the calculation period and the retirement age. Women often have lower pensions due to career breaks, such as pregnancy and child care. In 2022, the average pension in West Germany was 1,664 euros and in East Germany 1,350 euros. It is all the more surprising that in 2022 fifty pensioners will have received more than 3,000 euros per month. However, this can be explained by the fact that they have paid into the pension fund for at least fifty years and had an average annual income of around 85,000 euros. For most Germans, such a high pension is not realistic in old age, so it is advisable to think about retirement planning early on.
