A fatal development for new pensioners in Germany

Pensioners who retired in Germany in 2022 received an average of 1,084 euros per month. That was 15 euros less than for seniors who were already drawing a pension. This emerges from a response from the Federal Ministry of Labor to a request from the Left Party in the Bundestag. Left party leader Dietmar Bartsch described the state of the statutory pension as very worrying and emphasized that this development had fatal consequences. Pensions are not stable, as Chancellor Olaf Scholz claims, but the arrow points downwards. People with poor wages and precarious work, especially from the 1990s, are increasingly coming into retirement, dragging down the standard.

Increasing applications for pensions at 63

There are parallels to this topic in the increasing number of applications for a pension without deductions after 45 years of work. In the first nine months of 2023, the number of applications rose sharply. According to figures from the German Pension Insurance, there were already 245,289 new applications for the “pension at 63” by the end of September. This is 16.8 percent more than in the same period last year. The reason for the increase is, among other things, that more and more employees of the baby boomer generation are reaching retirement age.

There are already a total of 2.2 million users of this type of pension whose pensions are particularly high because they have worked for long hours. At the end of 2022, the average net pension for male pensioners was 1,728 euros (East: 1,431 euros) and for female pensioners it was 1,293 euros (East: 1,362 euros).
