The index itself, whose composition is determined by a committee of economists and analysts from Standard & Poor's, refers to listed companies with certain criteria, such as positive earnings figures in four consecutive quarters and a market value of at least four billion dollars. These criteria and guidelines ensure that the S&P 500 represents the most important companies in the USA.
This is not only a snapshot of the market, but also a reflection of its development. The S&P 500, which has shaped market activity on New York's Wall Street since its introduction on March 5, 1957, remains a central indicator of the economic situation in the USA. The heavyweights in the index include companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook, which continue to drive it.
