Sparkasse Bergkamen-Bönen: 140 years of local support

The Sparkasse Bergkamen-Bönen is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year. In the 19th century, savings banks were founded to support low-income citizens. The idea was to help people help themselves through thrift and ownership. Today the Sparkasse's mission is to support public life through donations. With around 500,000 euros in funding last year, the Sparkasse supported numerous clubs and institutions in the two municipalities of Bergkamen and Bönen.

Sparkasse Bergkamen-Bönen differs from other banks in its status as an institution under public law. Representatives of the two municipalities sit on the board of directors and monitor the work of the savings bank. This ensures a close relationship with the municipalities and customers. The Sparkasse is committed to cultural life by supporting projects in the areas of culture, sport, schools and daycare centers.

Over the course of 140 years, the way the Sparkasse works has changed significantly. Digitalization has automated processes and simplified activities. Nevertheless, the Sparkasse continues to emphasize the importance of personal customer contact. Against the background of mergers and growing competition from large banking associations, Sparkasse Bergkamen-Bönen sees itself as David against Goliath and relies on local presence and modernization of its branches in order to be able to compete with large associations.
