Sporting heights: Julius Leber School celebrates new sports hall!

On July 5, 2025, the new inclusive sports hall at the Julius Leber School in Schnelsen was officially inaugurated after a construction phase of almost two years. The celebrations took place as part of a large school festival and a sports Olympics, in which 1,700 students took part in 20 disciplines at 60 stations.

The newly built sports hall is specially designed for wheelchair sports and includes three disabled-accessible changing rooms, a wheelchair storage area as well as height-adjustable basketball hoops and a motorized goal for the equipment room. In addition, the old three-field hall was renovated, making it available again.

Renovation and costs

The total costs for the new building and renovation amount to around 7.5 million euros. During the construction period, seven external sports halls in the district were rented to ensure that the students could continue to play sports. The renovation of the Dreifeldhalle comprised several measures, including:

  • Neue Schallisolierung
  • Neuer Boden
  • Drei neue Umkleidekabinen
  • Größere Geräteräume
  • Sicherer Prallschutz

The three-field hall was also converted into a special hall for wheelchair basketball, which further promotes inclusion in school sports. Interestingly, the new single-field hall was connected to the renovated three-field hall, so that a total of five full-fledged sports areas are available that can accommodate the large number of students.

Commitment and social responsibility

During the construction phase, 34,000 euros were collected through fundraising runs. As part of the celebration, headmaster Bulicke presented donation checks amounting to around 10,000 euros to various organizations, including the Hamburger Tafel, Plan International and the Sternenbrücke children's hospice. A third of the donation goes to the class fund, while another third goes to the school association.

The anniversary celebration and the renovation work on the three-field sports hall illustrate the commitment of the educational institutions in the region to creating modern and inclusive sports facilities. These developments help ensure that students of all abilities can be optimally supported. In addition, another project, the comprehensive modernization of the three-field sports hall at the Barßel school center, shows how important it is to create inclusive and energetically modern sports facilities that are available to both schools and clubs. mro.de reports that energetic aspects were taken into account here to create a bright and inviting atmosphere.

This trend towards modern sports facilities is crucial for promoting school sports and community in the region.
