The city of Neuwied ensures financial stability: property tax remains the same
On May 16, 2025, the Neuwied city council passed a new assessment rate for property tax B. This decision affects in particular the property tax for non-residential properties, while undeveloped properties remain unaffected by this adjustment. According to a statement from the city, the property tax for residential properties remains stable in order not to impose an excessive burden on citizens. Mayor Jan Einig emphasizes that the city has been in the black for three years and is therefore financially stable. This is a key concern, particularly in the context of the nationwide property tax reform that came into force on January 1, 2025.
In order to avoid financial losses of around four million euros annually, the assessment rates had to be adjusted. The assessment rate for residential properties remains constant at 610 percentage points, while the rate for non-residential properties increases to 1,400 percentage points. This enables Neuwied to secure income from property tax, which represents an important source of income for investments in public facilities.
Details on property tax reform
The property tax reform aims to make the calculation fairer, which could potentially impact property owners' individual tax burdens. Before the reform, the assessment rate for property tax B in Neuwied was around 420 percent. This increase in the assessment rate over the years reflects the increasing costs of local administration and infrastructure, which are essential for financial stability and needed investments in public projects.
| Year | Property tax assessment rate A | Property tax assessment rate B |
|---|---|---|
| 2010 | 300% | 380% |
| 2015 | 320% | 400% |
| 2020 | 350% | 420% |
| 2023 | 350% | 420% |
The statement by Alderman and Head of Finance Ralf Seemann on the relief of business properties through the reform shows that the city of Neuwied is acting proactively to maintain the quality of life of its citizens and at the same time secure financial scope for important public projects. In the coming days, new property tax notices will be sent out that reflect the adjusted assessment rates.
The stability of the property tax and the strategic adjustments in Neuwied are not only important for the city and its residents, but also for the long-term planning and implementation of municipal projects.
