Tax programs put to the test: The best programs for tax returns

Finanztest magazine recently tested 31 tax programs from eleven different providers, including download, browser and smartphone apps. The applications for the PC performed best in comparison. “Wiso Steuer” was chosen by Buhl Data Service as the test winner in each of the three software formats. With a rating of “very good” (1.3 or 1.4) and a price of 45.99 euros, this software stood out. A cheaper alternative was “Tax” from the same provider, which was an impressive download program for 19.99 euros with a rating of 1.4.

Among the browser programs, “Smartsteuer” was able to secure second place for 39.99 euros, while in the mobile apps “Wiso” competitor Steuerbot was beaten with an overall grade of 3.4 and a price of 39.95 euros. According to Stiftung Warentest, the test winners were characterized by precise calculations, correct information and easy operation. The best tax software was also the most expensive, but good programs were available for as little as 20 euros.

The testers found that there were big differences in quality between browser programs and smartphone apps. A total of 14 programs only received a “sufficient” rating. Three programs performed particularly poorly because they had errors when calculating model cases and had problems with user guidance. When evaluating the programs, various criteria such as user guidance, understandable language, data protection and services were taken into account.

It is important for taxpayers to note that not every software covers all types of income. People with income from rentals, investments, pensions or self-employment should therefore carefully check whether the chosen tax program meets their needs. The information about this can often be found in the frequently asked questions (FAQ), but in some cases this only becomes clear after entering data or creating a profile.
