Switching electricity providers: possible in just 24 hours from June 2025!
From June 6, 2025, the change of electricity provider in Germany will be shortened to 24 hours on working days. The new regulation is part of an implementation of an EU directive that aims to optimize the processes in the Energy Industry Act. Previously, the technical change could take up to three weeks, whereas in the future it will be completed within one working day, provided the notice periods are adhered to in accordance with the contractual conditions. So reported MDR about this significant change.
The new regulatory framework is intended not only to shorten waiting times for consumers, but also to stimulate competition in the energy market. From now on, providers can increasingly boast attractive prices and conditions, which leads to a more dynamic market. An important part of the new regulation is the introduction of the market location identification number (MaLo-ID), which will be required for the switching process from June 2025.
MaLo ID as a key for the switching process
The MaLo ID is an eleven-digit number that identifies a specific point of consumption and remains stable even if the meter is changed. Consumers are advised to treat their MaLo ID and meter number carefully and not to disclose them carelessly. This identification number will be required in the future for automated contract change processes, which could further reduce administrative effort.
Nevertheless, the regular notice periods of one month to the end of the contract term remain. The 24-hour rule only affects the technical changeover process, not the contractual conditions Lower Saxony Consumer Center supplemented. From 2026 onwards, the switching processes should be possible completely within this short period of time.
Practical tips for consumers
For consumers who are moving, it is advisable to clarify the power supply at an early stage and inform the new provider about the move. It is also important that retroactive registration with the provider is excluded from June 6, 2025. If the contract is terminated late, the basic provider often steps in and in many cases charges higher prices.
Another topic to consider is the situation when the previous tenant's electricity contracts have not been terminated. In this case, both the previous and subsequent tenants have to split the costs between themselves. It is also noted that meter readings should be read and recorded on the day of move-in or move-out to avoid later discrepancies.
