Study predicts: Nursing contribution increase expected in 2024

According to current forecasts, it is expected that nursing care insurance contributions will be increased in 2024. This is the result of a new study that was presented this Tuesday in Berlin. The increasing number of people in need of care will probably require an adjustment of contributions in order to guarantee the financing of long-term care insurance.

Although financing security was actually planned until 2025, according to the current DAK report, significant financing gaps are already becoming apparent in the fourth quarter of 2024. This could lead to contribution increases becoming necessary before the federal election next year. Last year, the Bundestag passed a reform to stabilize long-term care insurance, which, among other things, provided for an increase in contributions for those without children and those paying contributions with one child.

The study also shows alarming results regarding the workforce situation in nursing. It is expected that a gap will arise in the coming years as more and more nursing professionals reach retirement age and there are not enough junior staff coming through. This will mean that in some federal states more nursing staff will retire in the next few years than new skilled workers will enter the profession. In Bremen and Bavaria, this is expected to be the case as early as 2029.
