Environmental documentary: Earth at the limit - consumption and growth in crisis
The world's population has increased from two to eight billion people over the last hundred years, with an annual increase of 80 million people. This growth poses challenges not only in dealing with the increase in population, but also in the consumption of natural resources, which puts a strain on the earth. The environmental documentary "Too much consumption? Too many people?" by ARTE and SWR examines this topic and speaks of a “double overpopulation”, which results from both the increase in population and the increasing consumption of resources.
In order to escape the dilemma, the documentation relies on approaches of renunciation and restriction. She presents examples from the south, where non-governmental organizations promote reforestation projects and well construction, as well as from the north, such as the ecovillage in Copenhagen, where a communal lifestyle is demonstrated. These individual projects serve as a utopia and show how a more sustainable lifestyle is possible.
A high-earning couple in Milan uses as much energy just getting up as a family in the Sahel does in a whole year. The trend of zero population growth in countries like Italy and the decline in multi-child marriages in countries like Ethiopia alone will not solve the problem. Rather, the challenge lies in adopting a more sustainable and resource-saving way of life in order to reduce the burden on the earth.
