Unexpected wealth: Why some two-euro coins can be worth significantly more
According to a report by www.echo24.de,
Normally, euro coins are worth as much as the number stated on them. But two-euro pieces in particular can be significantly more valuable. Elementary school students in Germany are already taught how to calculate and handle money. But two-euro coins in particular can, in rare cases, be worth far more than expected. Why is that? Coins are often minted incorrectly in various ways. Anyone who gets their hands on such a coin can make a lot of money with it. Mis-minted coins are often resold to collectors on online platforms. These can be amounts in the three, sometimes even five-digit range. According to “Chip.de”, for example, you can find some 2 euro coins on the eBay sales platform that are being traded for significantly more than 100,000 euros. The price depends on the type of incorrect embossing.
These misprints can be quite rare – and valuable
According to “Chip.de”, the mismintings can vary greatly, but one of the rarest is the “fried egg”, “in which the inside of the coin is slightly higher than the outer ring and therefore protrudes above the egg white like the yolk”. There is also the error that the edge inscriptions do not match the symbols on the coin, i.e. the edge inscription from one country was combined with the symbols of another. Another common mistake that has an almost funny background: some mints missed Romania and Bulgaria's accession to the EU in 2007 and continued to mint the old EU map on coins.
Not only incorrect mintings are valuable - coins from dwarf states and with special mintings are also rare
Even if coins with incorrect minting are the best known, there are other criteria that make the coins much more valuable. For example, if they come from one of the small states of San Marino, the Vatican, Andorra or Monaco. Coins that were produced for special occasions, i.e. that contain special minting, can also be rare and valuable. According to “Chip.de”, a coin from Monaco is particularly special, of which only 10,000 were produced. In 2019, a special coinage depicting the fall of the Berlin Wall was also produced in Germany.
Be careful: not all misprints are valuable
In general, misminted, rare two-euro coins are popular collector's items that, with a little skill, can command a lot of money. However, it is important to note that not all mismintings directly make a coin more valuable. However, with the introduction of the digital euro, there could soon be some changes for consumers.
The market for rare coins, especially mis-mintings and special mintings of two-euro coins, has a large collector community and interest from investors. The demand for these rare coins could continue to increase in the future, especially as digital currencies are introduced. This could lead to collectibles becoming even more sought after and fetching correspondingly higher prices. The impact on the market and the financial industry could therefore be positive, especially for coin collectors, investors and dealers.
