Vietnam towards AI leadership in ASEAN by 2030!
Vietnam has established itself as a major player in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). According to the “Government AI Readiness Index” 2023, the country ranks 5th among ASEAN countries. The will to position Vietnam as a center for innovation and application of AI in the region and globally is supported by a clear national strategy. This strategy was launched by the Prime Minister on January 26, 2021 through Decision No. 127/QD-TTg.
A key goal of this strategy is to be among the top four countries in ASEAN and the top 50 countries worldwide in AI research and application by 2030. Vietnam achieves an average score of 54.48 on the AI Readiness Index, which is higher than the global average. In an international comparison, Vietnam ranks 59th out of over 193 countries; last year the country ranked 55th out of 181.
Strategic measures and investments
In order to achieve its ambitious goals, Vietnam is planning several concrete measures. This includes building 10 renowned IT brands and developing 3 national centers for big data and high-performance computing. In addition, 50 open data sets will be made available for AI applications.
Another important step includes the establishment of 3 national AI innovation centers and the positioning of a representative among the top 20 research and training institutions in ASEAN. Ministries and authorities have already developed plans to implement this IT strategy in order to significantly advance the digital transformation in the country.
Technological developments in Vietnam
In recent years, significant investments have been made in the country's digital infrastructure. The Defense Ministry has invested in Internet data centers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The cloud computing ecosystem already includes 13 data centers with 9,000 racks, with a goal of 34,000 racks by 2030.
In addition, Vietnam Television has put a data integration center into operation. The Ministry of Science and Technology has also announced the “Openscience.vn” platform to facilitate access to research data. Ho Chi Minh City has also published a plan for AI research and development until 2030.
In addition, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 66-NQ/TW, which calls for a renewal of legislation and enforcement. This resolution aims to strengthen digital transformation and the application of IT and big data in legislation.
Vietnam's global recognition in the AI field is also reflected in the AI Ready Reports ranking, where Vietnam is ranked 39th. This illustrates the country's commitment to continuous development in the field of artificial intelligence and to remain internationally competitive. While Vietnam ranks 5th in ASEAN, the country aims to strengthen its position on the global stage through innovative approaches and strategic investments.
