Increase in forced evictions in Frankfurt: Criticism of the city's ABG

Last year there was an increase in evictions in Frankfurt, with a total of 664 evictions being terminated. Of these, 165 were carried out at the request of the municipal housing company ABG Holding. Compared to the previous year, in which 298 evictions were ordered by private landlords, a higher number of 404 evictions were carried out in 2023, with 82 of these being initiated by the ABG.

According to the head of the planning department, Marcus Gwechenberger (SPD), the number of evictions in Frankfurt is increasing again. After declining in 2022, the number of evictions has now reached 2020 levels. Compared to the figures from previous years, there is a significant increase in evictions in Frankfurt.

The left-wing faction in Römer expresses criticism of the approach to forced evictions. Housing policy spokesman Eyup Yilmaz emphasizes that the city of Frankfurt continues to handle forced evictions ruthlessly. The ABG in particular contributes a significant portion to the forced evictions, which Yilmaz describes as endangering the existence of those affected. The left-wing faction calls for an end to forced evictions and emphasizes the need to guarantee everyone adequate housing.
