Increase in forced evictions in Frankfurt: Leftists demand a stop (98 characters)
In Frankfurt the number of evictions rose significantly last year. A total of 664 evictions were scheduled, of which the municipal housing company ABG Holding ordered 165. In comparison, a total of 298 evictions were announced by private landlords in 2023, with 209 ultimately carried out. Planning department head Marcus Gwechenberger provided information about these figures in response to a parliamentary question from the left-wing faction in Römer.
The latest figures suggested that the number of evictions in Frankfurt had risen back to 2020 levels, after a decline in 2022. In 2020, 672 evictions were scheduled, of which 414 were carried out, 80 of them on behalf of the ABG. The left-wing faction criticizes the actions of the city and in particular the ABG and describes forced evictions as a threat to their existence. According to Eyup Yilmaz, housing policy spokesman for the Left Party, the fact that one in five evictions is initiated by the ABG is worrying.
Yilmaz emphasized that forced evictions have become normal due to factors such as the coronavirus pandemic, inflation and energy crisis. He called for a stop to forced evictions and the provision of adequate housing for everyone affected. Despite the figures presented, he believes that the number of unreported evictions is higher because the official figures are only based on the findings of the social affairs department.
