Brandenburg transport companies start building barrier-free stops
Intensive work has been going on in Bauhofstrasse for a good six months, which is leading to significant restrictions for residents and users of local public transport and private transport. The official start of construction for the two new barrier-free stops of the Brandenburger Verkehrsbetriebe (VBBr) was carried out today by VBBr boss Jörg Vogler. The project will cost a total of around 1 million euros.
The new stops will each be 30 meters long and will be staggered to the side, with a pedestrian crossing in the middle secured by a traffic light. This traffic light will increase the safety of pedestrians when crossing Bauhofstrasse in the bus stop area. The stop in the direction of the main train station will be near the daycare center, while the opposite stop in the direction of Nicolaiplatz will be near the Jedermann senior citizen facility.
Originally there was no stop at the location of the new stops until they were planned and provisionally set up with the construction of the daycare center. In order to correctly adapt the trams to the new barrier-free stops, the tracks must be adapted. Once the stops are completed, the tracks will be re-laid and the road surface renewed.
In a later construction phase, it is planned to pave the road further towards the Jacobstrasse intersection. This step is planned for the summer. The resumption of tram traffic through Bauhofstrasse is planned for November, while private traffic could possibly be possible again from October. The later start of the tram is related to the construction of the overhead lines and other necessary installations.
