The end of an era: Rebstock” in Seengen closes forever!

The legendary “Rebstock” in Seengen will finally close. Loud Aargauer Zeitung The restaurant will close its doors forever on July 7, 2025, while the butcher shop is expected to cease operations at the end of August 2025. A total of 17 full-time positions are affected, 10 of which are in the restaurant and 7 in the butcher shop. The closure follows the decision to abandon the property due to the need for renovation.

The building, which dates back to the mid-19th century, is in dire need of renovation and no longer meets the latest energy regulations as well as requirements for disabled access and earthquake safety. In addition, the premises are not suitable for a contemporary catering business. As a result, the decision was made to develop a planned development on the corner of Schulstrasse and Poststrasse in the form of two apartment buildings with a total of 30 apartments and around 500 square meters of commercial space. The building application for the project is currently being prepared, with the total cost being around 20 million francs.

A long story

The history of the “Rebstock” is deeply rooted in the region. Originally opened in 1855/56 as a restaurant with a bakery under the name “Zum sharpen Eck”, the house acquired tavern rights in 1878 and was renamed “Zum Rebstock”. Since its founding, the inn has experienced numerous changes of ownership, most recently at the end of 2022 the new duo Karina Wodrich and Nepomuk Graf took over the restaurant and butcher shop from the Hauri dynasty, who had run the house since 1955.

The Hauri era will end after 801 months. The family justified the sale with the next generation's lack of interest in taking over. During the handover, Hans-Peter Hauri expressed fatigue after long days of work. Loud LBA The company is now being taken over by Rolf Kasper (Kasper Holding AG) and Philipp Gloor (Terrial AG), who want to continue the company's tradition with new management staff.

The future of the vine

Kasper sees the “Rebstock” as an important institution for the region and does not intend to make any major changes to the business. The goal is to continue to offer guests a pleasant experience, including dishes that come from our own butcher shop. The purchase agreement has already been signed and the entire team is to be taken over to deal with the staffing crisis exacerbated by the Covid crisis. Management positions must be filled by the middle of next year to ensure a smooth transition.

The planned development and the closure of the “Rebstock” mark a turning point in the region, which brings with it both the loss of a traditional restaurant and the hope for new life through the developments on the corner of Schulstrasse and Poststrasse.
