Monument protection authority stops roof renovation: Ruth family has to pay an extra 30,000 euros
Claudia Ruth and her family were carrying out a normal roof renovation when the monument office suddenly showed up and stopped the work. The Ruths' house was listed as a historic monument without them knowing about it. Now expensive plain tiles should be used instead of the Frankfurt pans that had already been laid. This resulted in additional costs of over 31,000 euros for the family, which made the attic uninhabitable.
The Lower Monument Protection Authority in Hanau viewed the terraced house complex as a whole and emphasized the preservation of the “beaver tail roof landscape”. Despite other modernized homes nearby, the Ruths were cracked down on. Claudia Ruth felt overwhelmed by the process and was unable to object to the decision. Even the hint of possible funding didn't help the family.
After water damage and the official requirements, the daughter moved out of the uninhabitable attic. Claudia Ruth emphasized the lack of transparency in the monument protection process and warned other homeowners about similar experiences. Despite the personal hardship caused by her husband's illness, the family was unable to avoid the additional costs. Ultimately the construction work was completed, but the financial burden was enormous.
