Danger of collapse in Berlin: residential building completely evacuated
An apartment building in Berlin, in the Schöneberg district, was completely evacuated due to the risk of collapse. The police cordoned off a large area of the streets surrounding the building. The house's facade had deep cracks, raising serious concerns about its stability. The house is located at the intersection of Goltzstrasse and Grunewaldstrasse. The residents were instructed to leave the building immediately.
The evacuation of the apartment building was carried out on the instructions of the building inspectorate in order to ensure the safety of the tenants. This measure was implemented on Wednesday afternoon, meaning that no access to the building has been permitted since then. It remains unclear how the affected residents will be accommodated as the evacuation was very sudden.
The tenants were informed by the landlord on Tuesday evening that they were no longer allowed to enter the bay window rooms on the corner of the house. The problems at the corner of the house were already known, but the extent of the damage turned out to be greater than initially expected. A structural engineer will inspect the home before the area closure is lifted. Similar safety precautions had become necessary in the past in other cities such as Frankfurt, when tenants had to leave their homes at short notice due to the risk of collapse.
