Frankfurt is looking for restaurateurs for the Nette Toilette - join in!

Frankfurt am Main launched the “Nette Toilette” initiative on May 16, 2025 to significantly improve the public toilet infrastructure in the city. As part of this concept, catering establishments should make their toilets available to the public free of charge. The aim is to increase the number of clean and safe toilets that are more accessible to citizens and visitors. The city of Frankfurt itself is actively involved in this project and will provide financial support to the participating companies in order to promote acceptance.

The “Nette Toilet” concept, which was originally developed in Aalen in 2002, represents an innovative solution in sanitation. It does not impose consumption requirements for using the toilets, meaning consumers can use the facilities even if they do not consume anything. This regulation could prove to be an advantage for catering establishments as they could potentially attract additional customers.

Restaurateurs and their responsibility

In order to successfully implement the initiative, the city of Frankfurt is actively looking for interested restaurateurs from across the city. So far, the first companies have already reported that they are willing to make their sanitary facilities available. The participating businesses are identified by a special sticker on the entrance door that provides information about facilities such as accessibility or baby changing facilities.

The head of education and construction, Sylvia Weber, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. She emphasizes that the “Nette Toilette” not only contributes to improving the cityscape, but also has a positive influence on the customer frequency of the catering establishments. By making the toilets publicly accessible, more people can be attracted, which ultimately benefits the business of the participating companies.

Additional measures to improve toilet infrastructure

In parallel to the “Nette Toilet” project, the city of Frankfurt is working on modernizing its existing public toilet facilities. Locations that have already been implemented have been identified in the Südbahnhof, on Bendergasse in the old town, in the Hafenpark and in Bethmannpark. In the future, additional urinals and system toilets will be installed in the station district, as well as mobile toilet facilities on the banks of the Main. Renovations in heavily frequented locations such as the Hauptwache, the Alte Oper, Schweizer Platz and Leipziger Straße are given particular priority.

The city of Frankfurt has set itself comprehensive goals to optimize the public toilet infrastructure and wants to achieve sustainable improvement through this initiative. Interested restaurateurs can register by email to become part of this important initiative. More than 20 cities in Hesse are already involved in the program - Frankfurt is now setting an additional example of development in this area. t-online.de, frankfurt.de
