Great uncertainty at Tegernsee: What will become of the Hotel Bachmair?

The Hotel Bachmair am See in Rottach-Egern, which has been closed since January 2021, remains an unsolved mystery. The plan was to reopen in the summer of 2025, but the current state of affairs is sobering. So far there has been no noticeable progress in the renovation work, which has been at a standstill since then. According to a report by Mercury Investors appeared in the local council behind closed doors to inform the very dissatisfied mayor Christian Köck and local council member Gabriele Schultes-Jaskolla about the current situation.

Hirmer Immobilien, which took over the hotel as a long-term lease in 2019, has not yet provided any new information about the future of the hotel. The André Bar last closed at the end of 2024, making the entire area seem even emptier. The renovation plans originally included 155 rooms, but were reduced to 130 rooms due to Corona; It was decided to completely gut the hotel. Because of capacity bottlenecks and cost explosions in construction, the renovation plans were revised a year ago. Since then, the building authority has not received any new plans, which was described by building authority manager Tanja Butz as an “absolute standstill”.

The insecurities surrounding ownership

In advance there were rumors about a possible sale of the hotel by the Hirmer Group, which also operates other hotels and a men's fashion store. These rumors were denied by Hirmer, but they were vague about future plans. The hotel's last Facebook post was from July 2022, which was full of hope for a planned opening in 2025, however this perspective does not appear to be changing.

Tegernseer Tal Tourismus GmbH, led by managing director Christian Kausch, has taken up the discussions about the standstill. Designer Lola Paltinger is disappointed by the standstill and expresses her hope for a revival of this traditional house, which for many visitors to Tegernsee has a strong connection to the region.

Signs of life through pop-up offers

In order to bring some life into the area, a pop-up bar called Lenz&Friends is operated in the hotel's arcades. This is open from Thursday to Sunday until October and is intended to offer people a place to stay, at least temporarily. It remains to be seen whether and when the Hotel Bachmair am See will actually open its doors again. Mayor Köck hopes for clarity soon and expresses the hope that a concrete time frame can be communicated soon. However, the current standstill is nothing but guesswork.
