Hanau: From Kaufhof to Stadthof – New life on the market square
After the city of Hanau acquired the former department store property on the market square for 25 million euros following the insolvency of the Galeria Kaufhof Group, the extensive renovation work is in full swing. The building, which now bears the name “Stadthof Hanau”, will open next autumn with an attractive design. In particular, the ground floor, which will serve as the building's beacon, is being developed quickly to attract onlookers and shoppers. A so-called experience concept is aimed at in order to inspire visitors.
The Karben-based company Satis&fy is responsible for the design of the ground floor and the shop areas, which are offered in a variety of innovative designs. Over 20 different “shop blocks” ranging in size from 16 to 106 square meters are intended to provide variety and discovery in the shopping environment. We are looking for potential tenants who are innovative and creative in order to implement the concept in the best possible way.
The centerpiece of the ground floor will be an agora, which will function as a meeting point and event venue. The concept of interim use of the city courtyard is expected to run for several years, with special attractions in the basement such as a sandy landscape or a traffic kindergarten. Future expansions and implementation of various facilities are planned in the long term to appeal to a wide range of visitors.
The total cost of converting the former Kaufhof is an estimated 40 million euros. The plan is for the Stadthof to be able to generate its own operating and interest costs in the long term. Nevertheless, the city of Hanau will initially have to expect an annual subsidy requirement of around 2.5 million euros. The management of the new city courtyard is in the hands of the municipal Bauprojekt Hanau GmbH, which has already hired staff for the project.
