Historical splendor: Munich Facade Prize 2023 revealed

The city of Munich has awarded the 2023 Facade Prize to the most beautiful houses in Munich. A total of 17 exemplary renovated buildings received awards, which can now be admired in a window exhibition. The competition was first launched in 1969 to counteract the trend at the time of neglecting the urban significance of historical facades during renovations. The aim of the prize was to highlight the art-historical and architectural relevance of historical buildings.

The winners of the Facade Prize 2023 include both private and public buildings in Munich. The award-winning properties include historic buildings of various sizes. The renovation and design measures of the award-winning owners contributed to preserving Munich's unique cityscape. Each prize is worth 500 euros, and the winners also receive a certificate and a prize plaque.

The outstanding award winners include the “Bogenhauser Hof” on Ismaninger Straße and the restaurant “Tantris” on Johann-Fichte-Straße, which are popular with prominent guests. The renovations of the facades were evaluated by a jury, with criteria such as originality, design richness, color design, quality of craftsmanship and urban design significance playing a role.

The application phase for the Facade Prize 2025 is already underway and participants can submit their documents until February 28, 2025. The city of Munich emphasizes that the listed status of a house is not a mandatory requirement for participation in the competition.
