Criticism of the barrier-free entrance in Bockum-Hövel
The House of Encounters in Bockum-Hövel recently received a new entrance area, but one user criticized it because it was not designed to be barrier-free. The woman in question, a regular visitor to the building, including the district library, has to use the back entrance if she wants to enter the building with a stroller because it is barrier-free. However, the automatic door opening is not always activated, which is why she had to ring the bell several times to open the door on her own.
The mother expressed her displeasure that the new entrance area, which cost around 90,000 euros, was rebuilt almost identically to the previous one, instead of being designed to be barrier-free from the start. The city argues that the cost of an additional ramp would have been too high and the main focus was to ensure the barrier-free accessibility of the existing entrance.
The meeting house is used by various groups, and the rear entrance door is controlled by employees via a key switch. To improve barrier-free access, additional measures have been taken, including the installation of a bell with intercom for people without key control. The city promises to improve organizational processes to avoid such situations.
The mother emphasizes that it is important to provide equal paths for all users and describes the new staircase as a missed opportunity. She hopes that future construction projects will take better accessibility into account from the outset. As part of the entrance renovation, other elements such as the door system, lighting and signage were also renewed to improve the overall impression of the building.
