The city of Leinfelden-Echterdingen is launching an ambitious project to modernize its municipal apartments to improve energy efficiency. It starts in Oberaichen, where the focus is initially on three apartment buildings that were built in the 1970s. The goal is to make all urban housing climate-neutral by 2040. An interesting aspect of the project is the idea of ​​adding a fifth floor on top of the existing apartment buildings in order to create nine additional apartments. This could exacerbate the housing shortage in the region. In order to cope with the additional tasks that arise, the CDU parliamentary group submitted an application to create a new position in commercial building management, which was initially rejected. This position is to be advertised for a limited period of three years.

Mayor Otto Ruppaner said that there is a prospect that the city budget will be approved, although this still needs to be checked by the regional council. The city administration has already started preparing a study on the need for renovation of its municipal properties in 2022. This shows that long-term planning and strategic decisions have been made to address the urgent need for renovation.

The real estate office in Leinfelden-Echterdingen is divided into three departments: property management, commercial building management and technical building management. The department for technical building management is particularly responsible for the energy-efficient renovation of the city's residential buildings.
