After Karstadt closure: Future of the old town of Berlin-Spandau

The closure of the Karstadt department store in Berlin-Spandau in the summer raises the question of what should become of the building and thus of the entrance to Berlin's largest pedestrian zone. The department store has shaped the old town of Berlin-Spandau since 1965 and represents a central contact point. In view of the impending vacancy and the prospect of dark shop windows, discussions have arisen about alternative uses in order to create a new entrance for the old town.

In the Tagesspiegel's Spandau newsletter, Mayor Frank Bewig from the CDU and deputy district leader Carola Brückner from the SPD commented on rescue options for the department store. Four unconventional ideas were presented as to how the striking building could continue to be used. However, no proposal was made to open a new department store. In addition, Spandau's seniors were given an insight into the advantages of the previous department store.

Another topic in the current Spandau newsletter concerns the controversial street renaming on Carossastraße, which has gone in unexpected directions. In addition to these topics, the newsletter offers an overview of current developments in the district, such as the planning of new citizens' offices, traffic restrictions and upcoming cultural and sporting events in Spandau.

It remains to be seen how the discussions about the former Karstadt building will continue and what creative solutions will be found to offer the old town of Berlin-Spandau a new, attractive entrance.
