Additional cost shock: Left uncovers LEG billing errors in Braunschweig!

In Braunschweig's Weststadt, Die Linke is causing a stir with its criticism of LEG Immobilien's high utility bills. Today, July 7, 2025, numerous tenants are reporting incorrect heating and hot water cost bills, which are apparently illegally prepared according to a blanket formula. This emerges from the findings of the “heating cost check” that the party carried out to check the invoices for accuracy. Loud Okerwelle Affected tenants are entitled to a 15 percent reduction in their bill.

LEG Immobilien SE is present in Braunschweig's Weststadt with around 1,500 apartments. The question is repeatedly raised as to how the company will manage to pay out high dividends of 153.2 million euros to its shareholders in 2024. This corresponds to around 900 euros per tenant per year, based on 167,000 apartments in the entire portfolio. The Left sees these profits as the result of rising rents, inadequate service and dubious utility bills. An incident in Göttingen received particular attention, in which tenants received additional demands of up to 51,000 euros, which caused a stir nationwide.

Support for tenants

The Left Braunschweig has announced that it will actively support the affected tenants. Leonie Bartsch, co-chair of the party, emphasizes the need to defend ourselves against unjustified billing. The party also offers a free heating cost check that shows alarming results and is intended to expose LEG's billing practices. “We call on tenants to defend themselves against these high additional costs and to insist on their rights,” Bartsch continued.

The problem runs through the reporting on the housing market in Braunschweig. In addition to the additional costs, there is also talk of rising rents and apartments that are in poor condition. As part of an information evening organized by the Braunschweig Tenants' Alliance, the organizers would like to provide information about the legal options available to tenants next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Rotation youth center.

The Left takes a clear position against the practices of LEG Immobilien and calls for an examination of the billings. Tenants should no longer be satisfied with excessive additional costs, but should fight for fair and transparent billing.
